The Tangle Free Waters Recycling Program

In order to combat the dangers created by improper disposal of  fishing line, Tangle Free Waters started to build and distribute fishing line recycling bins across lakes, rivers and harbors across North America.

Fishing line, or monofilament, can take hundreds of years to biodegrade. Due to the fact that it is thin and clear, birds and animals can’t see it. These animals become entangled in it or mistakenly ingest it, resulting in injury or death.

The Tangle Free Waters Recovery and Recycling Program is an innovative project dedicated to reducing the environmental damage caused by discarded fishing line. This program also aims to educate the public on the problems caused by fishing line left in the environment. We encourage recycling through a network of fishing line recycling bins built and installed across local rivers, lakes and harbors. The program and creation of these fishing line recycling bins depends on public support through volunteers, donations and the sales of our environmental bracelet.

The Fishing line recycling bins we create and install can be seen above and are built using PVC pipes and can easily be installed at any river, lake or harbor. If you would like to build your own bin check out our guide here. Tangle Free Water’s goal is to install 1000 of these bins across North America. Together we can help clean up local rivers, lakes and harbors and keep our waters fresh and tangle free. These bins help protect local wildlife and waters by encouraging the proper disposal of fishing line, while also educating people on the dangers fishing line and plastics cause to the environment.
